Hey Matriarchs!

Remember that email where I said things at work had settled down and I was finally letting myself relax a little?

Three days later, I got laid off.

Apparently, I sent that update too soon.

I’m okay. Really. This changes the plan, obviously, but I can see some good in it too. I have more time to put into my business, and more time for this newsletter, which I’ve wanted to do more with anyway.

So here we are. I’m going to be combing through my budget, updating my resume, figuring out where I can save money, and putting more work into growing Untrained Momentum, my tech business.

It also means the things I was already planning to share with you about saving money, side hustles, and finding work are suddenly very real for me right now. This week we’ve got a lot less money coming in, a little less going out, and a few things worth looking into.

Pick what you need. The full stories are on the site.

Side Hustle Spotlight: Halloween treat bags, done for them

Some people love putting together 24 matching Halloween bags. Some people would happily pay to have them show up finished. Classroom parties, party hosts, and the house that goes all out for trick-or-treaters are three places to start. But cute packaging can eat your profit faster than you think.

Are we paying too much for food we could make?

Protein snacks. Waffles and pancakes. Bread. Yogurt. We looked into what’s actually worth making at home, and the answer isn’t automatically “all of it.” Here’s where the savings can show up, what takes more waiting than work, and when the store version still makes sense.

I got my internet bill down from $120 to $50

For two years. I called and asked to speak with customer retention. That’s $70 a month staying in my budget, and it made me look differently at the bills I’d gotten used to paying. There are a few things to check before you accept a “better deal,” though.

Talk soon, Jen
